“With lambing and calving just starting to take place across much of the country, it’s important farmers do what they can now to prepare ahead of severe weather arriving,” says B+LNZ’s Extension Manager Southern South Island Olivia Ross.

“We’ve already had a reminder that it’s still winter with snow to sea level in Southland this weekend, so it’s timely for farmers have a plan in place to move stock to sheltered paddocks where water is available, ensure feed is on hand, and that pastures are carefully managed, especially with heavy rain and melting snow to contend with.”

B+LNZ has a range of resources available on its Knowledge Hub to help guide farmers in preparing for adverse weather events, such as Snow Guidelines and advice on how to get ready and recover from flooding.

“It’s also important to prepare and look after your family, staff, and neighbours too, as if severe weather sees your farm cut off, then these are the people who we rely on to keep things going until access opens back up.”
